Prompt

I got a problem wrong and want to understand why, not just see the solution.

Subject: {{subject}}. Level: {{level}}.
The problem: {{problem}}
My answer and working: {{attempt}}
The correct answer (if I have it): {{correct}}

Please:
1. Walk through my working line by line and point to the first place it went wrong.
2. Name the underlying misunderstanding (concept, rule, careless slip or misread question) in one sentence, with the reason I might have made it.
3. Teach the missing idea briefly using one simple example that is different from this problem.
4. Show the correct solution in clear steps.
5. Give me two new practice problems targeting the same weak point, one easy and one harder, with answers hidden at the end.
6. Give me a quick rule, check or habit to catch this mistake next time.

If my working is ambiguous, tell me what you assumed. If the "correct answer" I gave appears to be wrong, say so. If you are unsure about a fact, say so plainly. Never invent citations, quotes, statistics or URLs.

Variables

  • {{subject}}Subjecttextrequired

    Default: algebra

  • {{level}}Levelselectrequired

    Options: Complete beginner, High school, Undergraduate, Graduate, Working professional

    Default: High school

  • {{problem}}The problemlongrequired

    Default: Solve 2(x - 3) = 10

  • {{attempt}}Your answer and workinglongrequired

    Default: 2x - 3 = 10, so 2x = 13, x = 6.5

  • {{correct}}Correct answertext

    Default: x = 8

Example output

**Where it went wrong:** line 1. You wrote 2x - 3 but the bracket should give 2x - 6. The 2 was multiplied by x only.

**Misunderstanding:** the distributive property: a number outside brackets multiplies every term inside. This is a very common slip when the second term is a subtraction.

**Mini lesson:** 3(y + 4) = 3y + 12, because 3 times y is 3y and 3 times 4 is 12. The same applies to 3(y - 4) = 3y - 12.

**Correct solution:** 2(x - 3) = 10, so 2x - 6 = 10, 2x = 16, x = 8. Check: 2(8 - 3) = 10.

**Practice**
- Easy: 3(x + 2) = 15
- Harder: 4(2x - 5) + 3 = 27

**Habit:** after solving, substitute your answer back into the original equation. With x = 6.5, 2(3.5) = 7, not 10, so the mistake would show.

*Answers (try first): x = 3; x = 5.5.*

Notes

Naming the first wrong step and the underlying misconception is far more useful than a model solution. Include your full working, even if messy.
